The Hemi is newer, uses an aluminum block and heads where the Magnum uses iron, and the Hemis have a higher power rating than the 5.9 Magnum ever had. Besides, if you use a Hemi, you get to slap one of those cool “Yeah, it's got a Hemi” bumper stickers on your car.
Magnum heads featured larger valves with smaller stems, revised ports, and a new valvetrain style. The architecture was not dramatically altered, retaining an 18-degree wedge configuration, the same valve position, spacing, and length, and the same port layout.
The fact is, the small block Mopar LA-engines (318, 340 and 360cid) were under-rated at the factory and were the last of the big three small blocks to be offered to the public.
The 3.9 V6 got the job done, but it produced plenty of noise and vibration, especially when attached to a manual transmission. Still, it was reliable and made acceptable power, and production continued for Dakotas and Rams through the 2004 model year.
Cancellation. On November 1, 2007, Chrysler announced that, as part of its restructuring plans, the Dodge Magnum would be one of four models discontinued after the 2008 model year.
